When the System Fails, Community Steps In

At Jannawi Family Centre, we have seen an increasing number of women reaching out for support due to domestic violence. Some have walked in seeking help after being referred to by friends, while others have contacted us through the NSW Domestic Violence Line. Each story is unique, yet they share a common theme—navigating the system is overwhelming, and too often, survivors are left without the support they urgently need.

One woman, for example, had Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) involvement to assess the risks to her and her children. However, once her case was closed, she was left without any ongoing counselling or therapeutic support. It was only through a former Jannawi client that she learned about our services and reached out. This situation is far from uncommon and highlights a critical gap in services for women and children experiencing domestic violence. Support should not end once immediate risk is assessed, ongoing care and trauma-informed intervention are essential for long-term recovery.

With the pressures on families continuing, we expect to see even more survivors seeking assistance in the coming months. The need for accessible, holistic support services has never been greater. At Jannawi, we remain committed to providing advice, referrals, and ongoing case management where needed, ensuring that no survivor must navigate this journey alone.

If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out. We are here to help.
