Breaking the Cycle of Trauma and Homelessness: A Story of Strength and Resilience
At Jannawi Family Centre, we believe in the power of connection, compassion, and support to help individuals and families break free from cycles of trauma and hardship. Recently, we had the privilege of supporting a courageous woman and her children as they navigated the overwhelming challenges of homelessness, abuse, and the ripple effects of trauma.
This woman had endured a 30-year history of abuse from two former partners, leaving her with limited decision-making skills and feelings of powerlessness. Her two youngest children, an 11-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son, were also profoundly affected. They had missed significant amounts of school, struggled emotionally, and faced developmental challenges. The daughter, showing signs of selective mutism and parentification, shouldered responsibilities far beyond her years. Meanwhile, the son, unable to read, expressed a deep dislike for school, further underscoring the impact of their unstable environment.
When referred to us by DCJ, her situation was dire. She was facing the imminent release of her abusive ex-partner, homelessness, and an overwhelming sense of fear and helplessness. Over the past few months, our team stepped in to provide her and her family with the tools and support they needed to regain stability and hope.
Here’s what we were able to achieve together:
- Safety First: We helped her understand how to use her AVO to protect herself and her children. We also assisted her in filing a statement with the police, leading to charges against her ex-partner for breaches and additional offenses.
- Rebuilding Stability: She secured temporary accommodation, moved her belongings into storage, and registered her car so she could transport her children to school and other essential places.
- Emotional and Psychological Support: Through trauma-informed conversations, she began to process her past experiences, recognizing the impact of abuse on herself and her children. We helped her identify manipulation and brainwashing tactics, empowering her to make better decisions and feel in control of her life.
- Strength in Independence: With guidance, she secured a new lease, marking a significant step toward rebuilding her life.
The transformation has been inspiring. For the first time, she feels supported, strong, and capable.
A heartfelt text message she sent captures her renewed sense of empowerment:
“2 things I’ve done now—one my Rego, now my new lease.
I just sent you woot woot—I’m a big girl now wearing my big girl pants.
Couldn’t have done it without you, Aisha. Thanks to the moon and back.”
At Jannawi, we’re proud to walk alongside families as they rediscover their strength and rebuild their lives. This story reminds us of the profound impact that compassionate, trauma-informed support can have in creating lasting change.
